Mr. Yoshikazu Ishii

Tabijitate or Tailored Japanese Split-toe Socks

In our Artisan Corner, Sumida-city’s excellent artisans show their technique by turns weekly.

This week, we have Mr. Yoshikazu Ishii, a master of Tabijitate or Tailored Japanese Split-toe Socks. His son, Mr. Kensuke Ishii replaces him depending on the day.

Tabi is traditional Japanese split-toe socks which are indispensable when wearing Kimono. Mr. Yoshikazu Ishii has been mainly making tailor-made Tabi. He says that each customer has his/her own strong demands for their Tabi, so his work is not completed just by making Tabi for them. It is not until that his customers are fully satisfied with his Tabi that his job can be really completed.  Mr. Ishii puts a high premium on tailoring Tabi good enough to meet customers’ demands with his accumulated experience and techniques.  He values his father’s remarks, “An excellent artisan should keep training throughout his/her lifetime”. His Tabi is not only traditional but also modern and lovely, therefore, some customers purchase his Tabi for their daily lives even when not wearing Kimono.
